Tips for getting through finals

Here are some tips that I used to get through finals:

1) Mark everything on a calendar, with the time and location of the exam. Also write down any supplies you need to have- pencils, scantron, bluebook etc.

2) Bring the supplies you need, and extras just in case. If a classmate is missing a bluebook and you have an extra, imagine how happy they'll be? There may be a day when you don't have a bluebook, and it will come back to you.

3) Come up with any questions or terms you don't understand. Bring them up with classmates in a study group, and with your professors in their office hours.

4) Learn how you study best. The best techniques for memory generally include using as many senses as possible: reading aloud a notecard as you look at it is a good example. Additionally, when we create an experiential memory, this is the best way to memorize. In other words, when you do more than just repeat terms, but think about them, make connections, and try to relate them to you personally, that's when you'll have the most success.
5) Add some humor: make a funny song with what you're trying to memorize, or if you're doing a math problem, figure out the circumference of leftover pizza etc.

6) Sort what you have mastered and what you are still confused on. Though it may be tempting because it's easier, learn to recognize when you have mastered a topic and move on to what you're struggling with.

7) To see if you really know something try teaching someone else. If you can explain it to another person, it will help you see what parts you may need to study more, and help seal in the information.

8) Remember that memory fades, so practice more than you think you need to.

9) Take time to get enough sleep!!! Additionally eating right is very important.

10) Take time to relax- 10 minutes per hour is recommended. Take a walk, eat a snack, stare outside the window, listen to a song etc.
