Lifescape and Chumash Reserve

This video shows the Lifescape, part of SBCC's campus and the classroom for the horticulture program. I highly recommend you check out the Lifescape's link, as it is a really awesome website!

I took this video as part of the series of videos I have been taking to show students the campus. I did this one a little differently, because the Lifescape is honestly really large, and hard to capture in one shot. I took different shots of the Lifescape, and compiled them together, and then added music and my audio description over it. I did this because a lot of people responded really well to the Dia de Los Muertos video, which is done similarly. Enjoy!

Lunch with my supervisor

Today I had lunch with Alex, who took me to the JSB cafe. (Read my previous post for more info on the JSB cafe here!) It was such a good opportunity to hear about his work experiences and how he decided to graduate school etc. We talked about the benefits of going straight to graduate school, or working first. After talking to him, I feel really good about my decision to attend community college to "find myself", because at graduate school you should basically know exactly why you need to utilize that skill. Additionally, in the business field work experience can be more important than graduate work initially, and then many return to get a graduate degree when they're more established with their career. He suggested I talk to some people in the field I want to be in, and also look into the job titled project manager, which is a combination of someone with technical skills but mostly dealing with people.

I'm so glad that I have the opportunity to work here as an intern and to be exposed to people in the industry who are willing to take their time to help me out.

If you are interested in an campus internship, check out the Career Center and use the Job Connection.  Just some advice from me: if a job isn't there that you want, go find it. I didn't find my job online, I called directly to find out if a position was open. Being proactive is vital!

College Fair Night

The 2010 College Fair was hosted by SBCC's outreach office. The event hosted more than 80 universities, various academic departments from SBCC and more. To reach the Outreach office at SBCC, call them at 805-730-4450, or visit online at http://www.sbcc.edu/outreach/ .

"A year from now you will wish you had started today"

So after some more thought, I am planning on staying here next semester to intern and take classes. Even though I'm financially itching for full-time work, I feel that I am gaining so much from my present internship that I wish to continue. In addition, I am really excited about the three classes I want to take next semester. Here are the classes:

From SOMA, the school of media arts.

To see my interview with the Dean of SOMA...

Multimedia Department
MAT 103: Introduction To Multimedia
(3) F, S - CSU, UC
Skills Advisories: Eligibility for ENG 100 and ENG 103.

An introduction to multimedia, including production processes, tools, techniques, trends and design principles, and production requirements of interactive multimedia development for the Web, on different devices. Provides a comprehensive look at the concepts and principles of digital media, visual literacy and the influence on business, education, art, science and culture.

The TAP Program

This past week I did so many different interviews and put together so much footage, but one that really stands out is meeting with the T.A.P. program. They describe themselves on their site:

T.A.P. is a comprehensive support program designed to assist under-represented students who are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university. Our goal is to facilitate a smooth transition from SBCC to a four-year institution.

The reason T.A.P. really stands out to me is it is directed by Francisco Dorame, who is a very caring individual. The T.A.P. program comes together like a family, and Francisco helps support students who are often the first in their family to attend college. He's extremely informative, and easy to reach by email or by phone: (805)965-0581 x2691.

Stay tuned for the video of the TAP students!

Working on the Machinal video

Today I am editing a video I came up with for the play called Machinal. Machinal is the story of a young woman in the 1920's who feels trapped by society. Everyone around her is like a machine, and she keeps doing what she thinks she is supposed to do and putting others needs before hers.

The play is extremely exciting, and I filmed dress rehearsal on Monday evening. I am putting together what I hope will be like a movie preview, except for a play. I am trying something new that I couldn't find a lot of information on, but I am going to try to make it so that people will definitely want to see the play. I have a lot of footage, and I think I will make a second clip about the theater intended not just about Machinal, but to show why our theater program is so cool.

Because there is so much footage, it takes a lot of time to import into IMovie. I use Imovie because its the simplest and it comes free on a mac. However, just because its free doesn't mean its not amazing software. All of my movies which I have done recently have been edited via IMovie, and it helps me add transitions, trim clips, add music. However, I still have to create the purpose of the story that I am telling.

Getting into editing

I have been really evolving with my youtube project lately. Using IMovie on my new mac, I have been editing the videos, which gives me the ability to splice them and add great effects. This video was a challenge for me, because I had to approach students on campus that I had never talked to before. However, everyone was surprisingly friendly, and willing to give their opinions of the school. I love how the editing transitions came out. I am going to do it as a series, which is great because I loved the project.

Lots of videos this week

"The world stands aside to let anyone pass who knows where he is going." -David Starr Jordan

This week has been pretty fantastic. I attended the Non-Profit Career Fair, and got two job leads from Telefund and Pathpoint. I have a job interview with Telefund this evening. I got a great video of all this, and am including it here:

I chose to start with this quote, because I feel like its very true. This week I have been making things happen. I did so many movies!  I am so proud of my new abilities to edit the movies using IMovie. I spent a lot of time and care on it, and I'm just happy people were so willing to work with me and be interviewed.

Career Services

Friday I worked with Kristin Frascella of the Career Services at SBCC to create a video outlining what they do. I also gave advertised on our facebook page and twitter that tomorrow is the Non-Profit Career Fair, which I hope to be able to capture on video. I am also going to be going there after I am done with work in order to look for a job for myself.

Phi Theta Kappa SBCC

I'm happy with how this video interview came out. Hannah and Grayson are really nice and easy to work with. For this video, I chose to go out by the Overlook, where you can see the La Playa Stadium in the background. The video was done from beginning to end in one take. You can find PTK on Facebook, their blog at email them directly at ptk@pipeline.sbcc.edu. Fall 2010 meetings are Wednesdays at 5:30-6:30 in the faculty room at Luria Library.

New Project!

I am very excited to beginning a new project here. I am going to filming various faculty/staff members here at SBCC for a video series of interviews. I have already got some people who are interested in being filmed, and working on getting more. I love meeting people and talking to people, so that is pretty perfect. I need to brush up on my film skills so I can get the perfects shots. When I took my videos into the flipshare program to look for still images (the ones featured in the slideshow), it made my realize that a video is like a series of good photographs, so I am going to be working on stringing together those images that would photograph well.

Flippin out

So I'm kind of excited about the flip right now. I went to their site to check out their software and found a way to look at my movies so I can take still photos out of them. Cool! Also met up with Jason from the Cyber Center who gave me another camera, which is totally awesome! I am so grateful to him. Then Karen came in and celebrated my birthday with me, with some totally amazing cheesecake. So I would say an awesome morning.

Video of the campus

So I have spent the last few days running around the campus with the flip camera I am borrowing from the Cyber Center. They are letting me use it for two months, which is awesome. In fact, any student can go in and check it out like they would a library book for two weeks to film for school etc. Doing the video has been challenging because I have never really shot video before. It took me about 8 times to get my welcome video down! That's okay though, because it is a learning process. I took some videos around the campus, uploaded them and reviewed them with Alex who gave me good feedback. Now I feel like the next set of videos are going to be better quality. I am also working hard on promoting the on campus clubs, as they really make up the life of the campus. Yesterday I talked to the Marine Tech director about doing an informal interview. Their website is already amazing, but hopefully I can make a good contribution to promoting them. Plus, they are pretty much the most interesting program to watch.

Also, of note, today is my birthday :D

Friendly Staff

I think the best thing so far has been the willingness of people to help me. After coming out of the working world for the last year as a cashier in retail, I was pretty used to having a much more stagnant experience. I feel now that I am going somewhere, and people care about me. The career services center is phenomenal. Yesterday I spent a whole hour with a counselor without even having an appointment. People are busy, but they still take time out to help students, and that’s incredible. The whole vibe of the campus feels like they want students to succeed. I can see it in Karen and Alex’s eyes when students pop their head in while they’re working and they patiently give directions. They really put themselves in the students’ shoes and think about what it takes for them to desire to be here and do well.

Hello

Welcome to my blog! My name is Kate, and I am the marketing intern at Santa Barbara City College. I came to SBCC to learn more about marketing, and before school began interviewed at the Marketing Department. I was so excited to be hired for the marketing position, and pretty much counting down the days until my job began. This weekend, many of my new roommates were remarking on how they still wanted more summer, but I almost couldn’t sleep because I was so excited about my new job. Yesterday morning I arrived on campus with an easy five-minute walk to school, and found Alex who began to introduce me to my responsibilities and get me acquainted with everything. We met up with Karen, and she expressed her excitement as well. I have never had a job where people care more about my success, or are more willing to hear my input. I will never forget what they said during the interview: “We want you to succeed.” That was so shocking I could not stop talking about it. The energy behind that statement has definitely been felt. I have gotten to meet a lot of important people around campus already, and can tell that the marketing department is both hard working and dynamic, and well respected around the university. Some of the projects I am working on entail online networking, such as Facebook and Twitter, working to market on campus events, and learning design skills. One thing I am especially looking forward to is taking photos, and I plan to keep this site full of them. I also want to work on interviewing students on campus and interacting with them. With so many exciting projects, I am sure I will have lots to talk about.
